Pacific Rim
So, today I finally managed to go to the cinema and watch it.
Anyone else has? I had been waiting for it for years and it became somehow of an obsession (I mean, one of my favourite directors making a film with the protagonist of Sons of Anarchy. I had to watch that) and I thought that just by watching the film the obsession would go away.
Was I wrong. I went to the cinema like 8 hours ago and I'm still obsessing and ranting about the film non-stop because I loved it! I'm even thinking about watching it in the cinema again (something I only did with one other film, Scott Pilgrim vs The World)
If you're doubting, it's really worth it. Go and see it

Re: Pacific Rim
Thanks for that perspective Sai! I barely ever get to the cinema, but del Toro is one of my few favorite fantasy directors-- I've never seen anything with a power and emotional resonance that quite matches "Pan's Labyrinth". I wouldn't expect the same from Pacific Rim, but it looks awesome and spectacular.

Re: Pacific Rim
Well Pan's Labyrinth is a different thing (it resonates more to me though, since I'm Spanish and it's a Civil War film) but there's power and emotional resonance.
I mean, it's not just robots beating the shit out of monsters. There's more to it than that

Re: Pacific Rim
Haha, yeah-- I'd be shocked if anyone capable of Pan's Labyrinth made a movie that was just robots beating the shit out of monsters!

Re: Pacific Rim
Also, the soundtrack is epic. The guy from Game of Thrones composed it and has Tom Morello playing guitar
Re: Pacific Rim
Tom Morello!???!??!?!?!
OH MY GOD
Just when I thought it couldn't get any more awesome.
I'm seeing it very soon, hopefully this weekend.

Re: Pacific Rim
This is an excessive stretch regarding electric guitar and Game of Thrones, but this happened last night:
Sean Snyder shared a link via Landon Donoho.

A much sexier interpretation of the throne.

Greg S. Cassel They should be shamed into making this the actual TV throne, at least by the time the whole series is written in the year 2110.

Sean Snyder It would be hard to write that in...Like what? The floor suddenly collapses and the rest of the throne is revealed?

Greg S. Cassel Oh c'mon, people change props and even main actors during TV series' off-seasons! No one would even notice!

Greg S. Cassel Actually, I love the idea that the floor collapses and the rest of the throne is revealed. But they probably wouldn't use dual electric guitars as in my imagination.

Sean Snyder Sorry, I thought the dual electric guitars was very fitting for the scene as well. I imagine that kind of celebration would have taken place after the triumph from last season.

Greg S. Cassel Perhaps they're saving it for dragonback sorties.

You say true, I say thankya
Re: Pacific Rim
Probably not relevant to this post but I gotta say...
I'm really happy Ron Howard's plan for adapting it fell through.
I always considered Peter Jackson and Del Toro as prime candidates for direction.
It would need to be a director that also writes screenplays.

Re: Pacific Rim
Not me, I had more faith in JJ Abrams and Lindelof, but I imagined why they pulled off... Del Toro has enough on his plate now, he's making another film, he wants to make like a hundred more films, he's preparing two tv series and I think a videogame and I don't want him to take 8 years before he makes another film
The thing that scares the shit out of me about Ron Howard doing it, is that he's going to have Akiva Goldsman writing the script. Akiva Goldsman wrote Batman and Robin. True that he wrote and directed several episodes of Fringe that were great but he also wrote Batman and Robin and that outweights things...
Also, Javier Bardem isn't my Roland...
ENOUGH DERAILING!! WE'RE CANCELLING THE APOCALYPSE HERE!

Re: Pacific Rim
Would have been a passion project for Abrams, but it is much too late for him to do it now. He's busy for the next decade.
Pretty much my thoughts match yours.
Way to bring it back to Pacific Rim! haha nice one.
Also fits for the Dark Tower if you think about it.

Saw it last night. Go see it. It's awesome.
And it looks like it isn't doing great in the box office, so support this movie! Or we won't get another one like this again

Re: Pacific Rim
Well-said Dylan! It's surprising that a well-received film like Pacific Rim that had BIG internet buzz isn't just slaying the competition. Perhaps del Toro should've thrown a bigger star into the cast.

Re: Pacific Rim
I suppose with a more well-known cast the box office numbers could have been boosted, but you have to think, who could have been in it?
Bet 100% the studio would have put in Channing Tatum, and that would have been a big mistake in my opinion.
I think there's a solid chance Grown Ups 2 could tank 60% the second week, and strong word of mouth can sustain Pacific Rim.
If it is able to get 100+ million in the states, it'll be a success.
Well, if this is the last pure blockbuster ever made with love and passion, at least it went out with a bang!
Del Toro is a special, intelligent, un-ashamedly imaginative filmmaker, and I hope he can garner the success he deserves.

Re: Pacific Rim
I agree about del Toro, Dylan, and I didn't mean to suggest that he SHOULD have put a bigger name in. I was criticizing the connection I've made between big names and box office receipts. I like your optimistic assessment of Pacific Rim's box office chances. It'd be quite nice to see that happen!

Re: Pacific Rim
Was totally blown away by it. Just absolute fun, I was grinning like a kid the entire time. I really wanna go see it again when I get the chance. Only bummer was the sound at the theater I went to was somewhat average, and I hear that good acoustics/bass really create an immersive experience when watching it.
That theme song though, incredible. Had no idea it was Tom Morello until later.

Re: Pacific Rim
It isn't doing so great in the US but from what I've seen it's recovered its budget already, so there's a chance
